Ongoing training in the Smith System defensive driving curriculum
Lorenz drivers receive ongoing defensive driving instruction through the Smith System, a widely respected professional driver safety program. Our team includes six trainers certified to administer the Smith System curriculum, allowing us to deliver this training directly to our drivers. The program focuses on hazard awareness, space management, and proactive driving techniques that help drivers anticipate and avoid risks on the road.
Samsara safety technology installed in every vehicle
Every Lorenz vehicle is equipped with Samsara safety technology, providing advanced telematics and monitoring tools that support safe driving practices. The system helps track vehicle performance and driving behavior while giving our team real-time insight into fleet operations. These tools help reinforce accountability, safety awareness, and continuous improvement across our fleet.
Mandatory FMCSA Entry-level Driver Training (ELDT) for new hires
All new commercial drivers complete the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) program before operating a motorcoach. Lorenz Bus Service is a registered provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, allowing us to deliver this federally required training directly to our drivers. The program covers vehicle operation, safety procedures, and regulatory standards, ensuring every new driver begins their career at Lorenz with a strong foundation in professional motorcoach safety.
Annual driver competition through FMCSA skills course
Lorenz drivers participate in an annual motorcoach skills course designed to test precision vehicle handling and professional driving ability. The course includes real-world maneuvering exercises such as tight turns, backing, and obstacle navigation. It provides drivers an opportunity to sharpen their skills while reinforcing a culture of pride and professionalism.

Safety is a top priority at Lorenz Bus Service and is supported by a comprehensive program of driver training, defensive driving education, and modern safety technology. These systems provide ongoing insight into driver performance and fleet operations, allowing our team to continually evaluate and improve safety practices. Our Director of Safety oversees this process—guiding training initiatives, reviewing operational data, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations—so every trip operates with the high standards of safety and professionalism our customers expect.
Lorenz Bus Service strictly follows Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) hours-of-service regulations designed to prevent driver fatigue. Drivers are not permitted to drive more than 10 hours or remain on duty for more than 15 hours following 8 consecutive hours off duty, in accordance with federal and Minnesota Department of Transportation regulations. For longer trips that exceed these limits, Lorenz may schedule a cutoff driver or team drivers to maintain compliance while keeping your group on schedule.
Lorenz Bus Service maintains comprehensive insurance coverage that meets and exceeds the requirements established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
Lorenz vehicles are inspected regularly to ensure they meet all federal and state safety standards. Drivers complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections to confirm each vehicle is ready for the road, and our maintenance team performs scheduled preventative maintenance and detailed inspections throughout the year.
