Training & Development
Training starts on day one, with full-time employment and paid training from your very first shift. Every driver earns a Smith System Training certificate, the industry standard for safe, defensive driving, and we keep those skills sharp through an annual drivers’ skills competition. We also offer Spanish language training. As you grow with Lorenz, career paths open up, including advancement into motor coach operation.
PAY & BENEFITS
Lorenz offers weekly pay and direct deposit to keep your paycheck predictable, along with paid time off, paid holidays, medical insurance reimbursement, and a 401k match program. Mechanics receive a tool allowance and work boots as part of the job. All benefits are subject to eligibility requirements.

Earn your Commercial Drivers License with Lorenz
No CDL, or new to driving professionally? Lorenz will guide you through the process from start to finish, with paid opportunities to work every step of the way.
Pre-requisites
Every driver starts in the same place: a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and the ability to pass a background check and health screening. These checks protect passengers and drivers alike, and they’re a standard part of joining any professional driving team. When you apply with Lorenz, we’ll walk you through exactly what’s required.
Permit
Before earning a full CDL, you’ll need a Commercial Learner’s Permit, or CLP. That starts with a written exam through the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services and a small fee. Once you pass, your CLP is valid for six months, and you’ll hold it for at least 14 days before applying for your CDL. During that time, you’ll practice on public roads with a licensed CDL holder by your side, building the skills you’ll need before driving students.
Training
This is where Lorenz invests directly in you. Every new driver receives paid training from day one, including practice for the pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and road tests required for your CDL. You’ll also earn your Smith System Training certificate, our standard for safe, defensive driving on every route.
License
Once you’re ready, you’ll take your CDL exams, then file your paperwork with your regular license, CLP, and social security number. A vision exam, photo, and background check complete the process. To drive a school bus, you’ll also need a school bus endorsement, which includes an additional background check, driver history review, health check, written exam, and road skills test. Every step exists to keep passengers and drivers safe on the road.
